Papers and photographs, 1734-1950, (bulk 1861-1923).

Papers and photographs of Augustus G. Weissert, an officer in Company K, 8th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Civil War and a commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), on both state and national levels, following the war. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence received and ephemeral items relating to Weissert's membership in the G.A.R. The correspondence deals with various issues facing the organization, such as veterans pensions and annual encampments, and includes letters written by twenty different commanders-in-chief of the G.A.R., several Wisconsin governors and congressmen, and department commanders from many other states. The ephemeral items include invitations to and programs from various G.A.R. events, encampment posters, calling cards, memoriam booklets, and patriotic materials. The collection also contains letters written by Weissert during his Civil War service, correspondence that his future wife and he exchanged during his attendance at law school in Michigan, and reunion materials for Company K, 8th Wisconsin. Correspondence, contracts, blueprints, and photographs document Weissert's role in the creation and placement of a Wisconsin memorial in Vicksburg National Park. Weissert family materials include correspondence and diaries from Weissert's brothers, wife, and daughter. Among the photographs in this collection are carte de visites of many members of Weissert's Civil War company and regiment, some tintypes of Weissert and his family, four photographs of the eagle Old Abe, and many images related to the G.A.R.
