William Muschenheim papers, 1923-1990 (bulk 1951-1985).

The collection is comprised of six series: Biographical and Professional Materials; University of Michigan Teaching Career, College of Architecture and Design; Publications and Research; Work Files; Photographs and Accompanying Material; and Presentation Boards. Papers span the years 1923 to 1990, however the material primarily documents Muschenheim's research and teaching career from 1953 to 1973. Papers include forms and correspondence regarding AIA fellowship nomination; teaching materials, such as course syllabi, lecture notes, and student papers; exhibition catalogs; manuscripts and published work; color plates prepared for publication of Why Architecture; project files; photographs and slides. Drawings and work files documenting projects numbered 123 to 192 maintain Muschenheim's original numbering scheme and include correspondence, notes, accounts and contracts. Among the work represented is the William E. Muschenheim House, the Donald E. Rutledge House, and the International Headquarters and Conference Center, Vienna, Austria Competition. Photographs and presentation boards span Muschenheim's full career -- projects conceived at the Behren's School and work representing his early years in New York and later years in Michigan.

Outside of museum holdings, no comprehensive survey and inventory of campus artwork had been attempted since 1937. With support from the Michigan Commission on Art in Public Places, 1,076 items were inventoried during 1988-1990. Additional inventory work was undertaken in 1997-1998 for risk management purposed, but generated little new information.
