The sketchbook, dated to the 1770s, has copies of designs from Greek vases illustrated in the 4-volume publication of the Hamilton collection by d'Hancarville. Flaxman, employed at the Wedgwood factory from 1775, used Wedgwood's copy of the book as inspiration for the shapes and decorations of the pottery he created. This sketchbook documents the precise way in which the d'Hancarville volumes served as sources for Neo-classical artists, and how classical antiquity was interpreted.
