Letters, ca. 1842-1908.

Letters from Frith to various correspondents, including six to his publisher, Richard Bentley (1888-1893), mainly concerning the success of his autobiography (pub. 1888), his painting, and social engagements. Occasional references are made to individual paintings, works in progress, and to other contemporary British artists, including Augustus Egg. The collection includes a letter to Lord Chief Justice Coleridge (1882) regarding a sitting for "Private view day at the Royal Academy," one to John Sheepshanks (1847) concerning his art collection, and one (1872) describing his painting of Mary Queen of Scots. With two portrait photographs of Frith, aged ca. 50 and 60, the former by the studio of Elliott and Fry.
