Dwight E. Harken (1910-1993), BA, MD, Harvard Medical School, Clinical Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, was Chief of Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Mass. Harken was the first surgeons to perform consistently successful surgery within the heart, and later developed the first device to assist the heart's pumping and the first internal pacemaker.
