Letters : Turin, ca. 1800-1850.

Letters to Carlo Bellosio, Gaetano Cattaneo, and Carlo Zardetti, colleagues and curators at the Brera. The earlier letters relate especially to the study and minting of memorial coins and medals, including several rough pencil sketches of coins acquired by Palagi for his collection. Palagi discusses at length financial arrangements for commissions of paintings and sculptures, also focusing on his submission of a granite column for a competition to erect a monument commemorating the Battle of Marengo (1811). The latter half of the letters (1840-1850) concentrate on organization of exhibitions at the Brera (such as a representation of Duke Emanuele Filiberto in 1568 as decoration for the Turin Senate Hall), acquisitions of art objects, among them vases and sculptures of Greek and Etruscan origin, and the enrichment of the Academy library with books on Tuscan and Venetian numismatics. Details of the transport and customs procedures for these valuable objects is provided extensively. Pelagi writes of his own works being displayed at the galleries, most notably of his own primitive watercolor designs hung without his knowledge, much to his utter disgust and equally to the public's amusement (1841).
