Administrative files, 1837.

This series consists of the administrative files of Acting Governor Hugh McVay. They contain correspondence, legislative resolutions, and an affidavit. Most of the items concern hostilities between settlers and the Indians, especially during the Seminole War. Much of the correspondence is addressed to former Governor C.C. Clay. Several items concern a court of inquiry to be held in Athens, Tenn. to examine the conduct of Brigadier General John Ellis Wool who was supervising the removal of Cherokee Indians to the West. Of particular interest is a letter from Thomas Jessup requesting 800 men to serve six months each in the Seminole War. Jessup states that the suppression of hostilities is of "utmost importance" to slaveholding states since there is evidence of collusion between the Indians and slaves.
