Arthur St. Clair Denver letter : Coloma, [Calif.], to Lou : ALS, 1864 July 18.

Letter mentions their friend, Charley Torbert, being "over the mountains somewhere in Silverland." Denver continues with considerable discussion of matters pertaining to families and children (e.g. difficulties faced by mothers of large families; disappointment of a Mrs. Williams at having a daughter "[She] wanted to name it Robert E. Lee.") Also discusses rapid expansion of railroads in California, including references to the Central Pacific and general public interest in railroad development, and to the sorry state of politics ("Played out. Gone and busted and the country with it.")
