Born in Germany, Schliemann lived in several European countries and made his fortune working in international commerce and the export business. Schliemann had no formal training in archaeology, but is best remembered for his excavations of Troy. John T. Wood, architect and archaeologist, built railroad stations between Smyrna and Aidin and Smyrna and Cassaba on the the Ottoman Railroad from 1858-1862. After the completion of this project, Wood spent eleven years making excavations at Ephesus (1863-1874) and discovered the site of the temple of Diana (1869).
