The poem recounts General Philip Henry Sheridan's ride to rally the Union troops at the battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia on Oct. 19, 1864. Part of an album of manuscript poems and letters of nineteenth-century English and American authors collected by Mrs. Annie Fields, author and literary hostess in Boston.
