Letters received, 1848-1878, with commentary by Arsene Alexandre.

A collection of thirty-one letters addressed to Daumier from French artists, illustrators and writers, assembled by the critic and biographer of Daumier, Arsene Alexandre. Correspondents include Charles Blanc (1848), Francois Bonvin (n.d), Cham (1876), Champfleury (1859-1878), Jules Dupre (1877), Gavarni (n.d.), Jules Michelet (1851-1860), Jean Francois Millet (1851-1852) and Theodore Rousseau (n.d.). Many of the letters are personal in nature, though the Champfleury and Michelet letters are particularly detailed and contain some reference to collaborative projects. The letter from Blanc is to inform Daumier that he has been given the commission to paint "la Republique francaise." In one letter from Pierre Veron, the editor of "Le Charivari," Daumier is chided for his failure to deliver lithographic stones to the printer Destouches (1866). The collection includes 30 p. of transcriptions and commentary written by Alexandre and three letters addressed to Alexandre from Fantin-Latour (1901) and Mme. Daumier (1891).

ca. 60 items.
