Führung durch die Pinakothek, [between 1912 and 1924].

Two bound volumes contain an unpublished manuscript which appears to serve as the basis for a lecture series dating from Wölfflin's period in Munich. This handwritten text details a method for disseminating principles of art pedagogy to the public. In drawing examples for comparison and analysis he comments on paintings in Munich's Alte Pinakothek dating from 1400-1800 as well as paintings elsewhere. He states that in walking through the Museum it must be asked how these works came to be painted, who commissioned them, and whether they were hung in a church or in a private collection. Wölfflin suggests various ways of viewing art, first, to look at the paintings and how they relate to paintings hung around them; second, to compare different artists; third, to note inner style and outer form. Wölfflin makes several comparisons between specific paintings such as: portraits by different artists from the same period, portraits by artists of different periods, the precise modeling of the 15th and 16th centuries with the more painterly style of the 17th and 18th centuries.
