Carnets, epreuves, documents (notes on art), ca. 1837.

A bound volume of unpublished notes on Old Master painting by the French Romantic poet Aloysius Bertrand, author of "Gaspard de la nuit." The notebooks relate primarily to the Dutch, Flemish, and German schools and each contains lists of artists, locations of paintings, and brief descriptions. Individual notebooks are devoted to Watteau and Cornelis van Poelenburg and one outlines a humorous proposal for the establishment of a Salon for the blind, the impoverished and the illiterate. Also included is a page of notes on ventriloquism (1837) and several ink and crayon drawings.
