This bound volume lists bounty claims of New York State soldiers who served during the Civil War. The volume appears to be a register of bounty claims which for the most part have yet to be paid. Furthermore, the volume may be only a portion of what was once a larger series since it only records claims of men who served in the 106th through 156th volunteer regiments.

At least seven of the signers who were paid here may be found in Thomas L. Cook's Palmyra and Vicinity as prominent citizens (Palmyra, 1930; see index). Some also appear in Backman, The First Vision (SLC, 1980). Chapter 184 of the Laws of 1863 and Chapter 29 of the Laws of 1865 authorized the payment of bounty monies by the state. This register was most likely compiled by the Paymaster General's Office on February 28, 1865 directed this office to supervise the payment of bounty claims.
