Harvey Williams Cushing was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 8, 1869. He graduated from Yale College in 1891 and in 1895 received his M.D. and A.M. degrees from the Harvard Medical School. Thoracic surgery developed as a specialty at the University of Michigan after 1920 with the arrival of Dr. John Alexander who instituted the nation's first residency training program in thoracic surgery.
