Manuscript account book, in ink and indexed, kept by ships' chandler William Earle, Providence, Rhode Island, from 1856 to 1862. Contains records for the sale of marine hardware such as blocks, metal sheeting and chain; naval stores such as tar, caulk, paints and chemicals; buckets, baskets, brooms, soap, foodstuffs, large quantities of cordage, manila, and other naval commodities to owners of named marine vessels. Also records the sale of goods to local factories, churches, banks, political organizations, and city and state agencies. Ledger includes personal accounts, store expenses, and records related to the lease of a room to Providence attorney A. A. Arnold.

The William A. Earle Papers fill one box and date between 1941 and 1988. The collection consists of biographical materials and his writings. Earle was a member of Northwestern's Department of Philosophy from 1948-1982, specializing in existentialism, phenomenology, and the aesthetics of the cinema.
