German-born photographer Giorgio Sommer opened his photographic studio in Naples in 1857, and published Naples and Surroundings that same year. While his views and genre scenes catered to the tourist trade, Sommer was also keenly interested in documenting archaeological subjects. Robert Macpherson was a surgeon from Edinburgh, Scotland who moved to Italy to become a painter in the early 1840s; from 1851 onward, he became an innovator in architectural photography, producing mammoth plate photographs of Rome and Tivoli.
