Cities and sites collection. ca. 1850-ca. 1949.

This is an open, growing collection of views of cities, sites, and monuments from around the world. Many views are by early photographers such as Robert Macpherson, James Anderson, Carlo Naya, and Giorgio Sommer, and a number of sites are represented by photographers from various time periods, showing the changes in the site over time. The collection contains examples of most types of nineteenth and early twentieth century photographic media including albumen, salt, carbon, collotype, cyanotype, and gelatin silver prints, as well as some handcolored prints.

German-born photographer Giorgio Sommer opened his photographic studio in Naples in 1857, and published Naples and Surroundings that same year. While his views and genre scenes catered to the tourist trade, Sommer was also keenly interested in documenting archaeological subjects. Robert Macpherson was a surgeon from Edinburgh, Scotland who moved to Italy to become a painter in the early 1840s; from 1851 onward, he became an innovator in architectural photography, producing mammoth plate photographs of Rome and Tivoli. Anderson, James, 1813-1877

James Anderson (born Isaac Atkinson in Blencarn, Cumberland, England) studied painting and sculpture before turning to photography in the 1840s.
