Richard Brinsley Sheridan Collection, 1781-1814.

The collection contains letters by, to and concerning Sheridan, including letters by Sheridan to Robert Barclay, the Duke of Bedford, and Samuel Whitehead; and writings by Sheridan, including four manuscript copies of the School for Scandal, one with annotations and corrections in Sheridan's hand; a holograph draft of a comic opera, The Foresters; and notes for Affectation, a projected comedy.

Robert Barclay, Quaker theologian, was born in 1648, the son of Colonel David Barclay of Ury, Scotland. He became a Quaker in 1667, shortly after his father joined the Society of Friends. His writings, especially his "Apology for the True Christian Divinity" (Latin, 1676; English, 1678) systemitized the principles of Quakerism.
