Zerah Coston Monks papers, 1859-1867.

The collection consists of a microfilm copy of the papers of Zerah Coston Monks from 1859-1867 as well as some original material. Correspondence (includes typescript copies) is between Coston Monks and Hannah Rohrer (1859-1867; includes summary); from Monks to his stepmother and his sisters Margaret and Sarah Jane (1862-1865); to Monks from his brother Thomas (1861-1864); to Monks, his mother, and sister from his step-brother George (1864) who was with the Ohio Sharpshooters; and to Hannah Rohrer from Simson Siggins, a boy who served as a fifer in the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteers (1862-1864). The letters describe Monks' and the others' war experiences. A sketch, drawn by Monks, is of the battlefront of the 2nd Division, 5th Corps, at Fredericksburg, Virginia. Notes and family history are by Caroline S. Monks, descendant of Coston and Hannah Monks. Original materials include a family history (typescript) of the Monks family with some account of the Rohrer family.

Zerah Coston Monks, educator, carpenter, soldier, and oil field worker, was born 18 July 1841, in Curlsville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania. He married a teacher, Hannah Rohrer (1865), who was born in 1842, at Stewart's Run, Venango County, Pennsylvania. Monks taught school in Churchville, Pennsylvania (1860), then worked in the oil fields. In 1862, he enlisted with the 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteers for three years, then with the 155th Pennsylvania Volunteers (Zouaves) as sergeant. He was involved...
