Currently under the supervision of the Dept. of Mental Health, Taunton State Hospital and its predecessors have been responsible for providing residential care and treatment of mentally ill persons in southeastern Massachusetts since 1854. Superintendent's letterbooks contain copies of outgoing correspondence generated during the course of administering the institution.
