Rutland State Sanatorium and its predecessors provided medical care to patients in the incipient arrestable stage of tuberculosis who could not afford a private sanatorium. Patients register recorded basic data when a patient was admitted to the hospital; records were later updated with date of discharge.

It was successively renamed the Massachusetts State Sanatorium in 1900, Rutland State Sanatorium in 1910, Rutland Hospital in 1963, and after the move to a new facility, Rutland Heights Hospital in 1965.
