Exterior and interior views of English abbeys printed by Frith in the 1860's from negatives made in the 1850's. Included are views of Bolton, Calder, Canterbury, Durham, Dryburg Easby, Fountains, Furness, Kelso, Lindisfarne, Melrose, Rievaulx, Tintern, and Whitby abbeys, and Bevery Minster and York Minster.

Frith, Francis, 1822-1898

Francis Frith, was born in Chesterfield, in 1822. An early exponent of photography, Frith set up his own company in 1859 in Reigate, publishing photographic views. He travelled around the world taking photographs and in later years employed additional photographers to satisfy demand. Frith died in Cannes in 1898, but the company continued to operate until its closure in 1971.
