Box 1: contains correspondence from colleagues and students concerning his study of Spanish ballads, his translations of Antero de Quental's poems and other language study items. Correspondents include James Fitzmaurice-Kelly, A.E. Housman, John Masefield, Edgar Prestage, George Santayana, Thornton Wilder and Ella Young. Also includes reviews, a plan of study, a student bibliography on Spanish Romance Music, items from his Lope de Vega collection, teaching materials, and misc. articles on the Spanish language. The English poet, playwright and novelist John Masefield was born in 1878 in Ledbury. After running away to sea early (when he was thirteen) he settled in London from 1897 and devoted himself to writing. Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) was an American photographer known for her early work in botanical imagery and nudes. During the 1930's, Cunningham explored the industrial and architectural forms of oil refineries, lumber mills, and shipyards. During the 1940's, her focus shifted to documentary street photography. Sylvanus Griswold Morley was born in Templeton, Mass. He attended Tufts University (A.B., 1898) and Harvard University (A.M., 1898 and Ph.D., 1902). He taught Spanish literature at the University of California, Berkeley from 1914 until 1948. He is particularly remembered for his work in the fields of balladry and drama, with a particular interest in the works of Lopr de Vega. Morley died in 1970.
