ArchivalResource

Papers, 1856-1939.

The collection includes some correspondence, notebooks, memoranda, newspaper cuttings, etc., 1856-1939. There are extensive series of notebooks which include accounts of experiments on carbon filaments carried out by Fleming when he was adviser to the Edison & Swan Electric Light Co., of tests on electrical and photometric standards carried out in the Pender Laboratory at University College London, and of experiments on valves and other aspects of wireless telegraphy which took place at University College, London and with Marconi at Poldhu in Cornwall (Fleming was associated with the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Co. as scientific adviser from 1899). In 1904 Fleming patented his 'rectifying' valve. This was adopted by the Marconi Co., to whom Fleming's patents had been transferred. Several items in the collection relate to litigation arising from disputes against Fleming's American patent, and to the application, in December 1918, for an extension of the time limit on his British patent. The collection also includes notes for lectures Fleming attended at Cambridge (including 'some brief recollections of Prof. James Clerk Maxwell which I put into writing soon after his death in 1879') and notes for lectures at University College London.
