Minutes [microform], 1951-1985.

The History of IUE Local 463, compiled by President James Trenz, is a four volume work-in-progress containing historical narratives, newsletters, handbills, financial reports, newsclippings, minutes, program of social affairs, organizing and election reports, correspondence, court records, and annual reports. Arranged chronologically, these materials document the development of the local, from its beginnings in 1950 through 1985. At the beginning of each year there is an "Annual Report of the President to the Membership of Local 463", in which President Trenz summarizes the union's work over a year. It begins with an evaluation, "State of the Union", and continues with chapters on Collective Bargaining, Pension and Welfare, Local Administration, and Labor Movement and Community. This report and the other documentation in the collection comprise a richly detailed and varied historical picture. The entire history has been paginated, and at the beginning of each book (part) of the set, there is a table of contents highlighting materials within the chronology. The first volume of the History of Local 463 IUE is remarkable for its clearly detailed narrative, by President Trenz, of the founding of the local in 1951. Documents from the battle with UE Local 1227 accompany a lively text discussing the background of the split and the political battles that ensued. Further summaries in the volume update the growth of the local. As a documentary history originating from the union itself, this History of Local 463 IUE is a unique document. It contains much original material for researchers on the history of collective bargaining and benefits innovations in light manufacturing industries. For researchers on trade unionism in the electrical industry, particularly during the crucial decade of the 1950's, it is an invaluable contribution.
