Oral history interview with John L. Allen, 1991 May 9.

John L. Allen joined the staff of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., in January 1940 to help establish and organize an office filing system. He served in the army during World War II and returned to the Gallery as an accountant, continuing to work in the treasurer's office until his retirement in February 1969. Allen described acquistiion of the Widener collection and his work assisting with its inventory. He recalled the atmosphere of the National Gallery and mentioned many of the early staff members, including a number of the guards. He discussed the employee recreation association, as well as the Gallery's innovative "LecTour" audio tour system.
