Childhood; years at Berkeley; life on Mount Hamilton in 1919; early years of marriage. Workings of the Lick Observatory in 1919: the apparatus, the astronomers, the duties of graduate assistants; and such subjects as food, lodging, water supply, and health care. Comments and anecdotes on the history of the Mount Hamilton road; the various telescopes; mountaintop living in 1919 and in the post-1945 period. Description of her husband's career (Charles D. Shane) prior to 1945, and a discussion of former directors of the Observatory. The years 1945 to 1958, when Dr. Shane was Director of the Observatory; administrative and technical problems at the Observatory. Various visitors to Mount Hamilton; her work with the Lick Archives; the International Astronomical Union meeting at Berkeley in 1961.
