William Coates papers, 1856-1891.

Letters, documents, and printed material belonging to William Coates. There are sixteen letters, many of them to Coates, two of them from William in Cascades, Washington Territory to his brother Joseph in Portland, Oregon. Three letters written in 1863 by William's siblings include Mary's account of the conflicting rumors of William's desertion and capture, and her view that African-Americans ought to fight in the war, and Joseph's account of his regiment's march on Fredericksburg. Other letters include a letter by John G. Meiggs for Henry Meiggs in Lima, and three letters from friends named Dean in Nehalem River, Oregon, as well as a letter written to T.B. Houston in Gold Hills, Nevada from his daughter Annie. Also included are announcement of his appointment as Special Deputy Sheriff in Multnomah County in 1872 and election as Territorial delegate in 1876, licenses to work as chief engineer of bay and river steamers in Oregon, handbill headed "Information Wanted" for a man from Patterson, N.J., and a Coates' claims to two lead lodes in Stevens County, Washington Territory, and a notice of his partnership in a mine near the Gold Mill in Kettle Falls Mining District in Washington Territory dated Jan 20 1886. There is also a printed citizen's pass issued by Head-Quarters Department of the Cumberland, Provost Marshal General's Office, Nashville, Tenn., dated May 2, 1863 and made out to Coates.

William Coates' family was from Patterson, New Jersey. He was a member of Company C, 1st regiment, N.Y. Volunteers during the Civil War, was captured and sent to Camp Parole, Maryland, where he was paroled. He moved to the Northwest after the war, worked as a steamship engineer, and lived in Portland, Oregon, and Spokane Falls and Cascades, Washington Territory.
