Photographic experiments, 1839-1844.

Over 500 experimental photographs and related pieces of paper, comprising the actual photo-chemical experiments conducted by Herschel during the early phase of the development of photography. The specimens illustrate a number of important contributions which Herschel made to photographic science in the period 1839-1944, including the invention of hypo fixing and the invention of the cyanotype (blueprint). Many of the specimens are annotated by Herschel, and fragments of other autograph writings are included.
