Chaplain, USMA, 1938-1941. Memoirs telling of early childhood, education, experiences as chaplain of the United States Military Academy in which he mentions incidence of prejudice against a black cadet, cadet weddings, religious education of cadets. The second part of the memoirs focus on Butt's experiences as a Navy Chaplain in Alaska and New Guinea during the second World War and his return to civilian life. The papers also include Butt's sermons; family genealogy; photographs.

West Point, N.Y., was originally utilized as a strategic defense location during the American Revolution. West Point is geographically located on a 100 ft. plateau overlooking the Hudson River. After the American victory Congress created a Corps of Invalids (veterans) that were transferred to West Point for the purpose of instructing candidates for commission.
