Letters sent to Gaston Guitton, 1864-1886.

The collection comprises short letters and notes sent by Edouard de Beaumont to his friend, the sculptor Gaston Guitton, between 1864 and 1886. They are signed, but only eight have the full date; the others indicate the day and month, or just the day of the week. Half of these messages were sent from Dieppe, where Beaumont avoided the hot Parisian summer months. He was frail and often felt "patraque" with severe headaches, colds, insomnia and aggravating "rhumatismes dans les environs du coeur," which prevented him from any activity. By the end of summer he is always eager to return to Paris and "me remettre à la pioche." He sends money or excuses for being late with the rent payments for his apartment in rue Poncelet. He asks Guitton to help a young sculptor with modelling a figurehead for which he had made a drawing "pour le mouvement à donner." On another occasion he asks him to convey his heartfelt congratulations to Baudry in Italy on his "réception à l'Institut"; or he wants him to interpret a paragraph from Ctesias about a pair of miraculous swords. A short and sad note dated 12 April 1871 from the bloody period of the Commune says: "Je ne sais pas ce que nous allons devenir" and adds in postscript that a dog locked indoors by a neighbour had been barking for 92 hours; "je les ai compté."
