Criticism of the new orientation of arts in France, 1925 December 5.

Three page manuscript expressing polemical views about the orientation of the arts which, according to Jeanniot, have stopped blossoming in France. One of the reasons given is the interference of politics in a field that should be dominated by "une érudition solide de la matière artistique." The other is the loss of the "grace des lignes" in design, and of a certain dignity in artistic expression. The best example, he says, is the recent Exposition des Arts décoratifs which, with its rivers of colored lights, "ressemblait plutôt a un feu d'artifice qu'à un spectacle de beauté noble et sévère."

Painter of portraits and genre scenes, also an esteemed designer and book illustrator born in Geneva. He was a disciple of his father, Pierre-Alexandre, the director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts of Dijon. An army officer, he resigned in 1881 and started exhibiting his works regularly at the Salon in Paris. He wrote this text at the age of 77.
