Psychopathic ward inpatient case files, 1911-1912.

Boston State Hospital and its predecessors were responsible for providing residential care and treatment to mentally ill persons in the Boston metropolitan area from 1839 to 1981. St 1911, c 395 required state hospitals to receive and care for persons suffering from acute mental disorders for a period not exceeding seven days. At Boston State Hospital, these patients were observed and evaluated in its psychopathic ward (as of 1912, the Psychopathic Dept., which separated from the hospital in 1920 to become the Boston Psychopathic Hospital, which see for records from 1912 onward). Inpatient case files were created to provide a record of the observation, examination, and evaluation of patients admitted to this ward.
