Oral history interview with Marily Perry, 1995 March 6.

Marilyn Perry joined the Samuel H. Kress Foundation as executive vice president in 1981. In 1984 she was elected president of the foundation. Perry described her educational background, how she was urged by Kress board member Franklin Murphy to join the Kress Foundation, and her experience there. She mentioned a fund which the Kress Foundation established in memory of Murphy which will enable the National Gallery to host international symposia on various aspects of the illustrated book. She described the foundation's ties with the Gallery including the initial Kress gift of paintings and sculptures, the photographic archives, and the Kress fellowships and professorships established in the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA). She recalled how the foundation commissioned and published the systematic catalogue of the Kress collection and sponsored other publication projects. She expressed her opinions on the purpose of the National Gallery and her philosophy on the relative merits of small and large exhibitions.
