Francis La Flesche was born on the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska and was of Omaha, Ponca, and French descent. He was the son of Omaha chief Joseph LaFlesche (also known as Iron Eye) and his second wife Ta-in-ne (Omaha). He attended the Presbyterian Mission School on the Omaha Reservation from 1865 until 1869. Nelle Richmond Eberhart, poet, writer, teacher and lyricist was born in Nebraska in 1871. Best known for her work with Charles Wakefield Cadman, she is credited with introducing him to the music and culture of Native Americans. They collaborated on both songs and opera including Shanewis, which was performed at the Metropolitan Opera from 1917-1919.
