Letters to Julio Payró, 1924-1957 (bulk 1952-1957).

The collection comprises 52 letters, 1 inventory of paintings, and 4 newspaper clippings. The letters include 46 from Emilio Pettoruti to art historian and critic Julio Payró; 3 from Pettoruti's wife, Maria Rosa, to Payró; and 1 to Pettoruti from the Comisión Argentina de Artistas Plásticos por la Paz, inviting him to participate as a delegate of the Argentinian artists to the 1955 World Assembly for Peace in Helsinki. The inventory lists the paintings exhibited in Buenos Aires at the Witcomb Gallery in 1924. The clippings are Italian reviews of Pettoruti's exhibition at the San Marco gallery in Rome in October 1953.

Emilio Pettoruti was born in La Plata, Argentina, of Italian parents. In 1913 he went to Italy, where he came in contact with the Italian avant-garde (Marinetti, and later with the Balla and Chirico group). In 1921 he went to Munich, and in 1923 was invited to exhibit at Der Sturm gallery in Berlin. He returned home in 1924, opening an exhibition in Buenos Aires which introduced modernism to Argentina.
