Text of a talk given at a symposium of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society on August 11, 1996. The symposium commemorated 100 years of particle physics. The talk relates to the events that lead to the establishment of the Division in 1967 and to reorganization of the American Physical Society.
