Letters, 1795-1811.

The collection comprises four letters and one manuscript. Two letters and the manuscript were sent together by Garrard to his patron, Samuel Whitbread in 1811, Dec. 16. A 3-page letter states that his mentor's picture of the Duke of Marlborough's horse could not have been painted by Marcellus Laroon. The artist confesses his fear that the busts he made will never be "held in estimation." He mentions the story of Lysippus, who made the famous bust of Alexander the Great, and the old times when the "great men did infinitely more" for the arts and the artists. Garrard encloses a translation of the story from a Herculaneum manuscript. In post scriptum, he is "glad to find that [the sculptor] Nollekens has raised his price to 120 pounds." A short note refers to his fixation on producing a good bust of his patron. The back of this note served as the envelope addressed to Whitbread at Southill, Biggleswade (postmarked 1811, Dec. 18).

The British artist George Garrard served an apprenticeship with Sawrey Gilpin, later his father-in-law. He first exhibited sporting pictures, then city views and landscapes. Guided by his patron, Samuel Whitbread MP, he expanded his artistic range as a sculptor of both animal and human forms. Besides portrait busts, he created series of scale models of cows and oxen in clay, then mass-produced in plaster. From the description of Letters, 1795-1811. (Getty Research Institute). WorldCa...
