John Beeson letters to Eli K. Price, 1859 Jul-Oct.

Two ALS, dated at Boston, written to Eli K. Price, a board member of an unidentified organization supporting Beeson's work for the rights of American Indians. Beeson discusses a dispute over use of board members' names in soliciting donations, difficulties in raising money and meeting his expenses, and planning and results of public meetings in Boston and Philadelphia. He also briefly discusses hardships experienced by his family as a result of his work, plans for a national convention, and projected publication of his newspaper The Calumet.

John Beeson was born in England and emigrated to the United States in 1830. In 1834 he settled in Illinois, where he worked as a farmer and was a supporter of temperance and abolition. Beeson emigrated to Oregon in 1853, and as a result of the Rogue River Indian War he became an advocate for the rights of American Indians.
