Letters, tax bills and receipts, and legal documents relating to Choate's real estate interests in eastern Iowa. Letters to Choate include those of the Banking House of Cook & Sargent, Davenport, Iowa, and Nathan P. Dodge, a real estate agent in Council Bluffs, Iowa. A receipt dated November 29, 1889, and signed by five Choate family members, acknowledges receipt of inheritances from C. F. Choate, the executor of the will of his mother Margaret M. Choate.

Choate was born in Salem, Mass. and graduated from Harvard College (1849) and Harvard Law School (1854). He devoted much of his practice to railroad law acting as counsel for the Boston and Maine Railroad. In 1865, he became counsel for the Old Colony Railroad, becoming its director (1872), and later its president (1877). In 1877, he was chosen president of the Old Colony Steamboat Company.
