Papers of Wright L. Coffinberry and other members of the Coffinberry and McCargar families of Grand Rapids. Volume containing both diary of Wright L. Coffinberry for 1855-March 1859 and records of his services (time spent, expenditures) as Kent County Superientendant of the Poor, 1880-1888. The diary is a detailed and well-written account of his daily surveying business, the weather, local civic and political interests, and religious musings. Also included is a manuscript autobiography (with partial typescript and index), 1887 and covering the period of 1760 to 1885 with details about his life and the life of his father George Lewis Coffinberry. This autobiography includes mention of settling in Michigan, his surveying activities, and service in the Civil War. The remainder of the collection consists of volumes of Coffinberry family genealogy; scattered family correspondence; miscellaneous biographical information and photoraphs; and a brief typescript history, 1920, of the application of assembly line technology to furniture manufacturing at the Stow-Davis Co. of Grand Rapids.
