Martin Ryerson was born in Bergen County, New Jersey in 1818. In 1851, he moved to Chicago and opened a lumber yard. He was involved in Chicago business and real estate. Ryerson was described in the Chicago Evening Journal as "one of the most prominent lumbermen and capitalists of the city, as well as being one of the oldest settlers." Ryerson was the father of Martin Antoine Ryerson who funded the Ryerson Physical Laboratory at the University of Chicago, and served on t...
