Letters, 1857-1883.

Collection consists of miscellaneous letters, arranged in chronological order. Ten letters by Menzel regard visits to his studio, social engagements and various commissions and offers. Most notable are: a letter, 1862 Jan. 7, concerning the painter's search for a new studio (he needs to complete his "Kr"onungsbild"); a letter, 1865 Sept. 25, commenting on an anti-Semitic interpretation of his painting "Christi im Tempel"; a letter, 1871 April 5, discussing another painting by Menzel, who comments on its expression of a deep feeling of peace seemingly in contrast to the wave of patriotic feelings prevailing in Germany in 1871. With an invitation from Otto Krigar-Menzel, 1909 Sept. 24, to view his Menzel collection which he inherited; and a calling card and postcard from Franz von Stuck (1901).
