The Massachusetts Correctional Institution, Framingham, houses females sentenced to imprisonment, awaiting trial, or committed by the courts for alcohol or substance abuse treatment (MGLA c 125, s 16; c 123, s 35). The psychology unit provides individual and group therapy and crisis intervention for the sentenced inmate population as well as emergency coverage for those awaiting trial. Quarterly statistical report forms are used by the unit (as in other correctional facilities) to report aggregate data concerning services rendered to the Dept. of Correction and to the institutional director of treatment.

The Commissioners of Prisons were established pursuant to St 1870, c 370. As reconstituted under St 1879, c 294, they were also known as the Board of Commissioners of Prisons.
