Contains a personal memoir relating his military experiences. Discusses his service in the national guard, artillery training, and assignment to England prior to entering the European theater of combat. Includes physical descriptions of England and the beaches at Normandy following the massive invasion. Contains details of his unit's advance through Europe, their encounters with German air and ground defenses, and the living conditions in the Allied camps. Describes the Army's frustration in running out of gas after capturing the town of Metz, their subsequent expulsion at German hands, and the horrible toll in lives it cost to reclaim the city. Also includes a description of Smith's religious conversion and experiences where he attributes his survival solely to divine intervention. Photograph, with accompanying negative, shows Smith in full military dress.
