Photographic portfolio of buildings and projects by Deane and Woodward, architects, (ca. 1854-1864) and chiefly featuring the University Museum of Natural History, University of Oxford (constructed 1855-60). ca. 1854-1864.

Principal content (41 of 48 photoprints) is the University Museum of Natural History in the final construction phases and documentation of much its iconographic decorative program, including 14 photos of capitals by chief stone carvers James and John O'Shea. The O'Shea brothers, following Ruskin's dicta, designed details of the ornament and to a certain extent determined their subjects. There are two photos providing overall views of the museum, six views of the great central court, a view of the library, and two views of window surrounds, one of which depicts James O'Shea. Ten photos are of carved stone statues of scientists and philosophers from Hippocrates to Priestley. Three photos depict the curator's residence designed by Woodward in 1857 for Dr. Henry Acland, a friend of Ruskin, and the motive force behind the inception and execution of the museum. This residence, at 40-41 Broad Street in Oxford, was demolished in 1937. Remaining photos document a government offices competition design (two 1857 drawings by John Hungerford Pollen of the facade for the War Office and a perspective drawing for the Foreign Offices); a perspective drawing of the Kildare Street Club, Dublin (1858-61); a fireplace design for Kilkenny Castle (extensive alterations: 1859-1861); Trinity College Museum, Dublin (1852-57: general exterior construction view and an uncompleted window vaulting).

1 album (47 albumen photoprints and 1 salted paper photoprint) ; 42 x 70 cm.

The Irish architectural firm of Deane and Woodward was an important contributor to the Gothic Revival in Victorian England as the first significant exponent of John Ruskin's precepts in shaping a Ruskinian Gothic style through the 1850s. The firm was an outgrowth of the practice of Sir Thomas Deane (1792-1871). Benjamin Woodward (1816-1861) entered Deane's office in 1845 and went on to design the firm's finest buildings in the 1850s. In 1850, Thomas Newenham Deane (1828-1899) joined his father's...
