Physicist and authority on the analysis and dating of extraterrestrial materials. He received a doctorate from Princeton University in 1948, and in 1950 accepted a position as physicist at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. In 1956, he was appointed physicist with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SA)) where he remained until his death.
