Oral history interview with Carroll J. Cavanagh, 1992 November 18.

Carroll Cavanagh served as the secretary-general counsel of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. from 1980 to January 1985, when he left to work for Paul Mellon. Cavanagh recounted the circumstances of his arrival at the National Gallery. He described the funding and impact of West Building construction projects and their relationship to the East Building. He considered the Gallery's public and private funding sources, and described the establishment and evolution of the Patrons' Permanent Fund and the Trustees' Council. He reflected on the Gallery's exhibition program and on the personality and accomplishments of various members of the senior staff.
