This volume contains a variety of documents relating to the construction and repair of the state's canal system during the 1870s. Included are manuscript copies of the proceedings of the Board of Canal Commissioners; correspondence between several offices and agencies responsible for canal administration; and a small amount of financial information regarding awards of the Board of Canal Appraisers, awards of the Canal Board, appropriations, and expenditures.

The Canal Board was established by Chapter 314 of the laws of 1826. Appeals to the Canal Board from decisions of the Board of Appraisers, later the Canal Appraisers, were made pursuant to Chapter 368 of the Laws of 1829; the Board's decision in these cases was final.
