Pardons, paroles and clemency files, 1837.

The Constitution of 1819 gave the governor of Ala. the power to grant reprieves and pardons in all criminal and penal cases, except those of treason and impeachment, and to remit fines and forfeitures. This series consists of letters, affadavits and petitions relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences and remission of fines imposed. The offenses include gambling, assault, larceny, manslaughter, murder and hog stealing. Individuals seeking clemency include John M. Collins, James Howard, William P. McGrew, James L. Roberts, John Simmons, Jonathan Stresser and James Thompson. Of particular interest is the case of William Savage who was convicted of manslaughter for the death of Joseph Morris. Petitions to the Governor on Savage's behalf noted that Savage was the father and sole supporter of eleven children under the age of fifteen.
